During two consecutive Hajj seasons, our teams observed a pattern that no one was solving with technology. Getting lost in the Sacred Sites is not a personal failure — it is a systemic risk multiplier that cascades into crowd disruption, medical emergencies, delayed emergency response, and a diminished spiritual experience.

Our field research across Mina, Muzdalifah, Arafat, and the Grand Mosque documented over 33 major operational challenges. At the center of them all: lost pilgrims.

REFAD is a fully integrated smart ecosystem connecting pilgrims, field support teams, campaign leaders, and regulatory authorities — enabling instant location awareness, accelerated emergency response, and seamless crowd management across the entire Hajj and Umrah journey.

The system operates in both indoor environments (inside the Grand Mosque using Bluetooth Beacons) and outdoor environments (the Sacred Sites, Mecca, and Medina via GPS/LTE/5G).

Component 1 — REFAD Locator Device

A dedicated GPS tracker assigned to each pilgrim. Operates for multiple days without recharging, supports indoor and outdoor positioning, and is equipped with:

  • SOS Emergency Button — sends immediate location + pilgrim ID to support teams
  • SIM Card — registered in the pilgrim's name, linked to the Nusuk platform
  • Live Tracking — field teams query any pilgrim's location and movement history via live maps
  • Geo-Fencing — automatic alerts when a pilgrim deviates from their predefined route
  • Two-Way Audio — emergency calls and ambient sound monitoring for unresponsive pilgrims

For tech-savvy pilgrims. Offers advanced wayfinding, ritual guidance, journey planning, and the ability to request support — all in multiple languages with visual and audio instructions.

Component 3 — REFAD Supervisor App

For field support teams. Receive live support requests, view real-time pilgrim locations on live maps, navigate to those in need, and coordinate with the command center — all from a mobile device in the field.
